The first thing that captivated me about this piece was the exquisite attention to detail and how much it resembles a graphite piece. It really does look like it was hand drawn, and a well drawn piece at that, and what makes it more amazing is that it's not; it's actually an intaglio print...which means it was etched into metal...which is Crazy!
On top of that, the piece is just awesome. I mean a swirling, demon vortex...Yeah. No, but seriously, it is very intriguing and it's symbolism is clear. I think everyone can relate to having demons and the feeling of being surrounded by them. This piece perfectly displays one's (St. Anthony's) consumptions, and at the same time (less relatable), the lack of fear for them. For St. Anthony looks unbothered by these monsters which pull at him; he actually looks quite calm. So, what I come away with from this piece is to not be afraid...to be strong among moments of anguish and troubling thoughts. Never surrender.
Because hey, there's still pandas ^_^
I would be interested to know if you have seen anything in current art (perhaps even graphic novels) that mimics this image. I wish my son was still living at home; I would peruse his vast collection of older black and white publications.
ReplyDeleteIt does in fact have that graphic novel feeling to it now that you mention it. I was trying to find some artwork that reminded me of it, but I guess I was more focused on the mood and composition of the piece. I hadn't thought of simply the black and white, almost pen like qualities it has...The Obvious Stuff!
DeleteThe first thing i thought of when we looked at this piece in class is this looks just like the cover of graphic Novel. Except of course A LOT more technical with it being Intaglio. I feel like the basis of a lot of graphic novels is GOOD VS. EVIL and although this piece is of a christian aspect, im sure if i look through my brothers graphic novel collect I would find something quite similar to this piece.
ReplyDeleteCrystalia - find us something. Would love to see the comparison.
DeleteI totally agree that this picture looks hand drawn and is well done. I also agree that everyone can relate to having demons and I also think this is a really good piece of artwork.
